Town boss Mick McCarthy hailed his side’s 1-0 opening day victory over Birmingham as a “perfect first day” aside from Andre Dozzell being stretchered off having suffered what is feared to be a cruciate knee ligament injury just before half-time. Debutant Joe Garner netted the winning goal five minutes after the restart.

Joe Garner got his Town career off to a goalscoring start as the former Rangers man netted a second-half debut goal to see the Blues to a 1-0 victory in their opening game of the season at Portman Road. Garner turned in a Jonas Knudsen cross five minutes after the break to win the game, however, the victory was marred by what appears to be a serious knee ligament injury sustained by Andre Dozzell just before the break.

Clayton Donaldson put the home side in front from the penalty spot in the 41st minute, Michael Morrison made it 2-0 eight minutes after the break before Webster headed his goal as the Blues attempted to stage a comeback in which Christophe Berra had what would have been a late equaliser harshly ruled out.
